A
clear and present danger to Iranians, Middle East, and America
Twenty-six
years ago the fundamentalist clerics, led by Ayatollah Rouhollah Khomeini,
succeeded in hijacking Iran's 1979 revolution for democracy and peace and turned
Iran into a bastion of Islamic fundamentalism. Since then, tens of thousands of
political activists have been killed or imprisoned, and political groups, women,
ethnic and religious minorities, have been subjected to inhumane treatment.
Sine
1979, the clerical regime has pursued a deadly and intransigent foreign policy
of exporting fundamentalism and sponsorship of terrorism, vowing to "liberate
Jerusalem via Karbala." Since the Iraq war in 2003, Iran has advanced a
nefarious campaign to expand and consolidate its presence in Iraq, the most
coveted territory by the mullahs since coming to power.
Iran
tyrant rulers embarked on development of weapons of mass destruction as a
cornerstone of their military doctrine. Possessing a nuclear weapons capability,
and the missile program to complement it, has been at core of this strategy.
In short, the mullahs rule of terror and tyranny in Iran poses a
clear and present threat first and foremost to millions of Iranians as well as
to security and safety of Americans. This threat is multi-pronged, multi-faceted
and omnipresent and therefore demands an urgent united campaign in several
fronts to defuse it.
The presidency of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has put Iran on a
significantly more belligerent path. Judging by what he has said and done since
his inauguration, the world should expect an Iran speeding forward with its
nuclear program and destabilization campaign in Iraq.

Nationwide
movement for democracy seeks an end to Iran's clerical rule
Despite tens of thousands of political executions and other
practices which amount to a reign of terror, the mullahs have not succeeded in
uprooting the nationwide movement for democracy. Indeed, the student-led
uprising of Iranians in Tehran and many other cities clearly showed that without
barbaric use of force, the clerical regime would not last long. In recent weeks,
many cities in western Iran have been the sconces of ferocious anti-government
protest. The triumph of this movement is the key to democratic change in Iran
and peace and security in the world.
